PREMIUM QUALITY de peces of cold water

Medium-sized carp fish

As we have already mentioned, among cold water fish we find endless varieties, each one more peculiar. However, roughly speaking, these are the most popular:

goldfish (carassius auratus)

Goldfish, also known as carp fish, are the most widespread. They are characterized by having orange and reddish colors. They tend to be of different sizes. Within this set de peces, we find different types:

  • Carp, gold carp or red fish. These fish have a very elongated body and tail.
  • Telescope fish. Its most striking feature is its very bulging eyes. They are usually black.
  • Pes cometa or sarasa. It also has an elongated body, with a single rather large tail fin. There is a white variety, but reds and oranges dominate.
  • Its bump on the head makes it very characteristic. There are several colors, but the 'Red Riding Hood' is the most common (white body and red head).
  • Veil tail. Like the comet fish, it has a prominent tail fin. In addition, it has a hump between the head and the back.

Sun perch (Lepomis gibbosus)

It is one of the hardiest aquarium fish. It has small orange spots throughout its body. Its character is aggressive if it lives with other fish.

Paradise fish (Macropodus opercularis)

It is one of the most colorful cold-water fish. Of course, it is quite territorial, which makes it very difficult to bring two males together within the same aquarium without problems arising.

Koi carp (Cyprinus carpio)

Of all the aquarium fish, it is the most common. Of reddish, white, yellow, bluish colors, etc., it is one of the most chosen for all those who choose to make a pond.

Chinese neon or cold water (Tanichthys albonubes)

They are very small in size, but their main characteristic is the striking color, which simulates neon lights. It is very common to find them in establishments specialized in the sale of pets, since they are one of the most sought after by aquarium lovers.

How to care for cold water fish

It should be noted that it is true that cold water fish do not require excessive care to survive, however, this is something a bit relative. To guarantee the good life of these animals, we have to take into account a series of aspects.

It is not surprising to see people who house these fish in small tanks and aquariums. Obviously, this is not the best, as they prefer large spaces.

The water in which they perform their functions must have a temperature located close to 18ºC and with a rather basic pH, between 6,5 and 7,5.

As far as food is concerned, they are not very selective, so feeding them does not present any difficulty. With products that we can buy in any specialized establishment, we will guarantee their correct feeding. Although you can also supplement your diet with small pieces of bread and food scraps, but be careful with the latter, since some experts advise that it is good while others say the opposite.

We should feed them around 2-3 times a day, with small amounts of food. Cold water fish can have an insatiable appetite.

They are very curious animals, so the decorative accessories in the water are ideal for them.

Of all the cold water species, the most recommended for an aquarium are the Goldfish y Chinese neon, which we have already discussed in previous sections.

Also known as Betta splendens, which are usually classified as tropical fish but adapt very well to life in cold water. Their main drawback is that they are extremely aggressive. However, in their favor it must be said that they reproduce easily.

Coldwater Fish Diseases and Dangers

Cold water fish can be affected by various diseases and factors that can cause their death.

If we see that our fish swim frequently in the upper area in search of the surface, it is that there is little dissolved oxygen in the water and this can cause them suffocation.

Sudden changes in temperature they are also highly damaging. To avoid this, you must ensure that the temperature remains stable and do not place the aquarium near a place full of drafts.

Another circumstance to take into account is the chlorine in the water, which can alter the pH and cause, among many other things, that the gills and body surface of the fish are destroyed.

Among the most common diseases we highlight the constipation (caused by a very poor diet), virus and bacteria poisoning, necrosis (manifests itself in the form of a state of nervousness in the animal, anemia, abdominal distention, etc.) and fin rot (It is one of the most frequent skin lesions and manifests itself as a whitish line on the edge of the fins that is spreading).

We can also include other diseases such as tuberculosis, smallpox, fungi, etc..

Bettas do not adapt to cold water, on the contrary, they need water at temperatures of 26 to 28 degrees Celsius, preferably and their reproduction is complex, requires a lot of care and dedication, in addition to warm waters and abundant vegetation.
