Decorative elements: Rocks and stones in the aquarium

Decorative elements

The decorative elements, such as rocks and stones, they must be pleasing to the eye and suitable for fish.

The purpose is to reproduce a pleasant environment and avoid that the decorative elements are not obstacles for the free movement of fish. We must not forget that the objects must be adapted to the dimensions of the aquarium and the size of its inhabitants.

Among the rocks and stones that are adapted to the aquarium with decorative functions we find, first of all, the shingle, which used discreetly and properly distributed are extremely pleasing to the eye and act as retention elements.

It is also possible to use pieces of the rocks of the siliceous type that are part of the cliffs in certain areas of the sea coast, since their varied shapes are very pleasant and the cavities that they frequently present do not constitute waste deposits and do not represent any danger to fish.

All the volcanic rocksThey are very popular but given their porosity it is possible that dirt accumulates in them, which will be eliminated simply by removing the rock from the aquarium and cleaning it with water.
Rocks and stones with a high metallic content or limestone benches should be avoided, as these will contribute to the alteration of the neutrality of the aquatic environment.

Other decorative rocks include red whetstone, fluorite, salified woods, quartz, and schists. It is also possible to combine beauty with functionality incorporating pieces of slate, since while they act as retention elements, they are very pleasant to the eye.

When large stones are incorporated, it is recommended that they rest on smaller stones so that there is a space between the large stone and the floor of the aquarium. This will facilitate the circulation of the water and will help to prevent excess debris from accumulating, facilitating the aquarium cleaning.

It is not recommended to use seashells whose roughness can hurt fish, especially freshwater fish that are not used to the presence of these elements in their habitat.
