El elephant fish, originally from central Africa, it is a rather curious fish, both physically and with different habits from the other fish in the aquarium.
This fish, which measures approximately 20 centimeters in length, is a fish that has a trunk-shaped nose, like that of an elephant, hence its name.
However, although its trunk is its main characteristic, it also has nocturnal habits that make it different from any other type of fish. The elephant fish, during the day, prefers to be hidden to avoid encountering other aquatic species, while at night it walks through the aquarium and looks for its food. It is for this reason that we must try to feed this little animal during the hours of the night, either with special dry food for fish, or live food.
Like elephants, this little fish is quite slow to feed, so we recommend that you do not have fast and voracious fish as pond companions, since they could steal its food and leave our animal without food.
Although this aquatic species is quite shyThey tend to be quite territorial. For this reason it is important that you have it in an aquarium large enough, or at least more or less 200 liters. In the same way, as these fish communicate with their own species by means of electric shocks, if the aquarium is small, the shocks could disturb the other fish that live with it.
Keep in mind that to keep the elephant fish in optimal conditions you must have an aquarium with a lot of vegetation so that the animal can hide there during the day, and maintain a water temperature between 23 and 28 degrees Celsius.
