Habitat and reproduction of the conger eel

conger

El conger presents, in terms of its habitat, a very wide bathymetric distribution, ranging from a little more than a meter deep in the rocky bottoms to more than a thousand, beyond the continental slope. Apparently the females can reach a greater depth than males.

Those conger eels that have their habitat on the rocky shoreline they remain hidden in their holes during the day and are active at night when they hunt. It feeds on cephalopods, crustaceans and fish.

El conger eel is a fish that in front of the observer does not denote fear although there have been attacks triggered by some shiny object. In areas where divers are frequent, they get used to human presence and can eat from the diver's hand.

Its distribution is present in all the peninsular coasts. In the Atlantic, it stretches from Norway to the coast of Senegal. In the Mediterranean it is common on all coasts and in the western half of the Black Sea.

La eel reproduction is one-time, as he is then quickly disqualified and dies. It makes more or less long migrations to reproduce, both horizontally and vertically, since spawning takes place at important depths, such as 800 meters, if we speak of the northwestern Mediterranean.

The females can lbequeath to lay between 3 and 6 million eggs, and development from hatching to juvenile form goes through several phases involving different sizes and shapes, the half larva, white and transparent, measures up to 15 cm; the leptocephalus (very similar to eels but larger) has the typical leaf shape and measures 13 cm. The youth, that already presents the cylindrical body, measures 8 cm in length. Once settled, it grows rapidly.
