The Aeromonas

The aeromonas They are bacteria that negatively affect the health of freshwater fish.

There are two types of aeromonas: the aeromonas salmonicida and the aeromonas hydrophila.

  • Aeromonas salmonicida: This type of bacteria is characterized by causing bleeding in the muscles of your fish and swelling of the animal's skin. Similarly, the fish may begin to experience bleeding in the stool. It is important that we take special care with fish that suffer from this disease, since if it is not treated they could die in a maximum period of 2 to 3 days.
  • Aeromonas hydrophila: This type of aeromonas can not only make the fish that live in the aquarium sick, but also make reptiles, amphibians and mammals sick, so it is important to be alert to any symptoms of the appearance of this disease. There are two types of infections: internal infections that occur within the animal's body, for example in the kidneys, where there is a retention of fluid that causes a distention of the abdomen; and the external ones that are manifested through the rotting of the fins that manifests itself, at first with the fraying of the fins until their total disintegration.

To treat this type of bacteria it is important that we improve the water conditions where our animals are. How to improve it? Partial and quite frequent changes of the water can be carried out, trying to feed the animals with live food and making use of vitamin supplements. Similarly, in extreme cases, antibiotics can be used to treat fish. It is important to note that this bacterium is resistant to penicillin, so it is advisable to use another type of antibiotics composed of sulfonamides, oxytetracycline or chloramphenicol.
