The Blue Mojarra


One of the most beautiful freshwater fish, that we can have in the aquarium is called the blue mojarra, also known as luminous mojarra or acara azul. Although it is native to the rivers of countries such as Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela, today we can also find it in Colombia, in the Caribbean basin, the Catatumbo Basin and in the Orinoco River Basin.

The scientific name of this fish is Aesquidens pulcher, and it is distinguished by its three spines, located in the anal fin and in the lobe belief in the first branchial arch.

This species is characterized by having an oval-shaped body, with a protractile mouth. It also has different colors on its body such as olive, with eight transverse bands in part of its body, and numerous blue-green lines on its cheeks. As generally happens in the animal world, the males of this species are much more colorful and larger than the females.

If you are thinking of having this type de peces In your aquarium, it is important that you know that they feed mainly on insects and live animals, so it is not advisable to feed them with dry food or special scales for fish. Likewise, if you want breed this type de peces and achieve their reproduction, you should know that they do not reproduce in crowded conditions, so it is advisable to have only one male and one female.

Keep in mind that this species of fish, although it is quite peaceful, defends its territory, especially if it has conquered it with its partner. So I recommend that you keep them in a separate aquarium, with enough hard plants, stones and roots so that they can develop optimally and properly. Remember also that this fish produces a large amount of excrement so it is advisable to carry out partial water changes weekly to avoid illness and infection.
