The truth is that its nickname is the first thing that has attracted us, so today we would like to dedicate the day to one of the species of fish that we have liked the most, so far. And, taking into account the image that you can see above, it is not surprising that it attracts attention. Although before drawing a conclusion, it would be better to see some of its most striking features.
As we have already said, one of the nicknames it has is that of Swallow fish, but the scientific name is even more curious, since it is usually called Dactylopterus volitans, being able to categorize it into the types of fish fliers, bats, or simply swallow. This is where, possibly, the nickname that we have said previously comes from.
Let's continue with interesting facts. The most usual size of the species is approximately 50 centimeters, it would make us start considering it with a medium size. However, we could also say that it is more or less normal, although its dimensions make us think of a gigantic species.
As to its habitat, the species can be found in sandy, muddy or rocky bottoms, at depths between one and 100 meters. It is clear that, even if we go on the surface, we could get to see it with ease. However, we also have to mention that its distribution is, above all, in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
As last data, it should be noted that its eating it is based, especially on fish, mollusks and crustaceans, something normal considering the areas in which it lives. Of course, there is no commercial interest in this species, so they can be found in abundance, without any additional problem.
