When it comes to taking a look at the fish that exist in the marine world, the truth is that we can take many surprises. Not only because of the variety (which is already a lot), but also because the appearance of some species is really curious. The Old Woman of the Water could be a good example to expose.
La Vieja del Agua belongs to the family Loricariidae, being present in places like the rivers of Paragua, Uruguay, Paraná and de la Plata. When you see it for the first time you will not be able to forget it. Especially because, according to people, it does not look very nice.
For starters, it has bony plates or shields covering it to protect it. It has a black coloration, a pronounced and spiny dorsal fin, and a fairly large tail. The mouth is, on the contrary, small, with two whiskers that it uses as if they were sensors. On the other hand, the bottom of the body it is flat, with a less intense coloration than other parts.
Prefers the warm waters, although it is not characterized by having great mobility. Quite the contrary: it tends to be still for a long time to hunt prey. Its diet is mainly made up of mojarras, tarpon and microorganisms present in the areas where it lives.
La reproduction It is also curious: it carries the fertilized eggs in a cavity located in the lower jaw, until the moment they hatch. It will be then when they become fry. In any case, it tends to protect the young even they are developed.
La Vieja del Agua is a rather curious species of fish, even dangerous at times. Not recommended to have in aquariums, unless a series of safety and maintenance measures are put in place.
